December 6, 12:00pm - 1:15pm
Manoa Campus, Henke Hall 325 Add to Calendar

Elisa Joy White will read and discuss various accounts and stories presented in her new book, Modernity, Freedom, and the African Diaspora: Dublin, New Orleans, Paris (Indiana UP, 2012). The book investigates the contemporary African Diaspora communities in Dublin, New Orleans, and Paris and their role in the interrogation of modernity and social progress. The talk will particularly address White’s fieldwork experiences as she explored the circumstances of racism, xenophobia, cultural conflict, and social inequality brought forth in the book.

Elisa Joy White is an Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She completed a PhD in African Diaspora Studies at the University of California at Berkeley, and an MA in African American Studies. She also holds a MA in Media Studies from the New School University and a BA in Theatre from Spelman College. Her research interests and publications include lesser-examined African Diaspora sites, Black European Studies, the social and cultural dimensions of globalization (transnational, cosmopolitan and new diaspora communities), the construction of racial and ethnic identities, and new media studies.
