As India emerges as a leading power in Asia, the government seeks to build better relations in the region through engagement and dialogue. Regarding the India - U.S. relationship, Ambassador Rao stated that it has evolved into a multi-dimensional strategic partnership. Amb. Rao will share her insights on India’s expanding role in the region.

Ambassador Nirupama Rao is a career diplomat with almost 40 years in the Indian Foreign Service. She was appointed as Ambassador to the United States in September 2011, following her two-year term as India’s Foreign Secretary, the highest office in the Indian Foreign Service. Prior to that, she served as India’s first female ambassador to China. Her other ambassadorial assignments include Peru and Bolivia, and Sri Lanka (where she was also India's first woman High Commissioner). Ambassador Rao has also previously served in Washington, in the capacity of Minister for Press and Cultural Affairs followed by a post in Moscow as Deputy Chief of Mission. On return to New Delhi, she was designated as Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs in 2001, the first female Indian Foreign Service officer to hold this position.
