The talk will describe what Borges, Frye, Foucault, the ancient Hawaiians, and Artemidorus can tell us about encyclopedias and the secrets they hold, with reference to Greco-Roman antiquity and, in particular, Artemidorus' encyclopedic compendium of dream-interpretations, the Oneirocritica
