Critical Issues in Korean Studies
January 24, 4:00pm - 6:00pmManoa Campus, Center for Korean Studies
"Desperate Mothers, Anxious Kids: South Korea's Family Plot" is topic of the Center for Korean Studies January 2013 Forum on Critical Issues in Korean Studies. The forum will feature presentations and discussions led by anthropologists Nancy Abelmann of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and Haejoang Cho of Yonsei University.
South Korea is undergoing rapid social transformation under the impact of globalization. People are living in a radically different environment from only two decades ago. From their job conditions, consumption style, and education to family relations and reproductive activities, hardly any area has not seen drastic changes. At the center of these changes are mothers and children. How do they adapt to these global changes, what are their new desires and anxieties, and how are their identities and mobility strategies are shaped by the global system? Through the prism of mothers and youth, these two well-known anthropologists, will probe Korean society and assess the direction of these changes.
