The Making of Moving Home: The Legacy of Halla Pai Huhm
January 31, 12:00pm - 1:15pmMānoa Campus, 325 Henke Hall
Visual artist and filmmaker Billie Lee will provide a director's commentary on the making of Moving Home: The Legacy of Halla Pai Huhm, the documentary on a Korean dance pioneer that recently premiered at the Hawai‘i International Film Festival (2012). Through discussing the deleted scenes, this illustrated talk will illuminate the trials and tribulations of the filmmaking process, but also highlight the challenges of visualizing the life-story of a woman who is no longer living, and whose past has largely been silenced.
Billie Lee is an interdisciplinary visual artist and documentary filmmaker. She holds degrees from Yale University and the Rhode Island School of Design and is currently pursuing a PhD in American Studies from the University of Hawai‘i at MÄnoa. Lee has taught at Yale University, the University of New Haven, Queens Museum of Art, and in Busan, South Korea, as a Fulbright Teaching Fellow. She has exhibited her work in the United States, Germany, Austria, Spain, and Korea. Lee’s work strives to go after topics that illuminate how we are connected through a complex web of social and historical circumstances and how art and film can create a space for reflection.
