Strategic Challenges for the U.S.-China Relationship

Ambassador J. Stapleton Roy retired from the Foreign Service in 2001 after a career spanning 45 years with the U.S. Department of State. Among his diplomatic positions, he served as ambassador to Singapore, China and Indonesia.
In 1996, he was promoted to the rank of Career Ambassador, the highest rank in the Foreign Service.
Ambassador Roy’s last position in the State Department was as assistant secretary for intelligence and research. In addition to currently heading the Kissinger Institute on China and the United States, Ambassador Roy serves as vice chairman of the National Committee on United States-China Relations, and on the East-West Center’s United States Asia Pacific Council and the Asia Foundation’s Board of Trustees, among other organizations.
Ambassador Roy will be in Hawai'i as part of a four-day briefing on China for USPACOM senior officers arranged by the National Committee on US-China Relations. He will be joined by about a dozen other experts on various aspects of China, half of whom are participating via videoconference.
Cosponsored by: East-West Center, the National Committee on US-China Relations and the US Pacific Command. Cooperating organizations include: the Pacific Forum/CSIS, the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, Friends of the East-West Center and the University of Hawai'i Center for Chinese Studies.
