Still Flow--MFA thesis exhibition by Michael Hengler
March 10, 2013 - March 15, 2013Manoa Campus, Art Building, Commons Gallery
Imagine setting out on a maiden voyage down the flowing lava rivers of the Big Island of Hawai‘i in a boat made of lava! Artist Michael Hengler presents "Still Flow," his MFA thesis exhibition. He transforms the gallery space into a lava-scape with rocks that crunch underfoot and video of lava-boats rolling over the magma flows of Hawai‘i. Dimly illuminated from the red glow of the lava fields, an eleven-foot lava-vessel rests upon a bed of basalt and awaits a voyage into a world that seems unbelievable.
Hengler considers this exhibition’s realization “an experience so surreal that seeing voyaging lava-boats on molten lava flows, somehow melts away preconceptions of human limitations and re-envisions what might be possible for us as we navigate our rivers of life.”
The opening reception will be on Sunday, March 10th from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The public is invited to meet the artist and venture into this paradoxical contemporary art creation.
