"Exploration of Lake Kauhako, Molokai"

Abstract: Lake Kauhako fills an extinct volcanic vent on Kalaupapa peninsular on Molokai, and is, with an area of 0.38 ha and a maximum depth of 248 m, the fourth deepest lake in the US and has the largest relative depth of any lake in the world. Below a thin, oxygenate surface layer, the lake is isothermal, anoxic, has a constant oceanic salinity and high levels of hydrogen sulfide. The talk will give an update on several expeditions by Prof. Axel Timmermann and the author to explore the lake bottom and to understand a late 2011 hydrogen sulfide venting event.
