Hackers, Nerds, and the Boys of Silicon Valley

October 10, 12:00pm - 1:15pm
Mānoa Campus, Henke Hall 325 Add to Calendar

During the 1980s, the twin figures of the “hacker” and the “nerd” became repeated tropes in popular film and media, just as technoentrepreneurs like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were being celebrated as the pioneers of an emerging information economy. This talk examines the links between the real business leaders and their fictive counterparts in forging a mythology of technological revolution as the harbinger of meritocracy and individualized success."

Sean Trundle is a recent Ph.D. graduate and adjunct faculty member in the Department of American Studies at UHM. His research interests include US popular culture, 20th century science policy, and digital media.
