Assemblages of Anarchists: Political Aesthetics in the Journal Mother Earth
November 8, 2:30pm - 4:00pmMānoa Campus, Saunders 624
Anarchists have high expectations for visual art and literature. They look to the arts to foment rebellion by dramatizing current injustices, imagining better futures, or inspiring the needed will and energy to rebel. My goal is to examine Mother Earth’s literary and artistic productions, looking both at the content or message of the art, and at the form or structure of the creative act itself. I look for patterns in the material that can help explain Goldman’s selections of art and literature, frame the journal’s aesthetic practices, and consider the likely impact those practices could have on readers and viewers.  I am interested in what readers could sense and understand in Mother Earth’s art and literature, and how they were able to feel and to see.Â
