Makahiki Imu Mixer
November 14, 2:00pm - 10:30pmMānoa Campus, Kumuola Foundation lo'i in Manoa Valley
The Ethnobiology Society at UH-Manoa invite you to join us this Makahiki season for an imu in Manoa Valley and a Talk Story panel discussion on Food Security in Hawai'i on November 14 & 15.
What is an imu? It is the Hawaiian word for an underground oven utilized throughout Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and even the Americas to cook and steam food.
This is your opportunity to participate in the labor and reward of preparing an imu to steam a whole pig, breadfruit, bananas, sweet potatoes, taro, and more. Due to the amount of time and labor required to prepare the imu, this kind of event is usually reserved for special occasions. This may be your first chance of experiencing this kind of enriching opportunity.
The event and food are FREE, but we kindly ask you participate in the service of preparing the imu (we'll show you how!) and help us malama 'aina (work in the garden) while our food cooks (good fun stuff). Please expect rain, mud, mosquitoes, lots of ono food, and a whole lot of FUN!
