Carlin Romano: America the Philosophical

February 7, 2:30pm - 5:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Sakamaki Hall C-308 Add to Calendar

In his widely reviewed book, America the Philosophical, Carlin Romano presents a critical history and analysis of the role of philosophy in American life, arguing against the standard view that the United States is an anti-intellectual society.

Along the way, Romano, who was the literary critic of the Philadelphia Inquirer for 25 years, provides a thoroughly reported picture of American thought, one the New Yorker described as "a comprehensive intellectual history form Emerson to Rawls."

In his talk, Romano will take listeners through key sections of the book, and discuss the spirited response it has evoked, before inviting the audience's own questions and comments.
