Snapshots From Rakhine
Video and photos from a recent visit to
Myanmar’s ethnic conflict area
Following the East-West Center’s recent International Media Conference in Yangon, EWC Director of External Affairs Karen Knudsen, along with Media Relations Specialist Derek Ferrar and several others, visited Myanmar’s western Rakhine State, site of ancient kingdoms and temples along with ongoing conflict between Rakhine Buddhists and the Rohingya Muslim minority.
Join us for a brown bag presentation as Karen and Derek share video and photos from the trip, including a chance encounter with a notoriously militant monk and visits to restricted Rohingya camps and a settlement for displaced Buddhists near the main city of Sittwe.
The issue remains a flashpoint: Just days after their visit, foreign aid workers had to evacuate Sittwe after being attacked by stone-throwing mobs in an incident tied to ethnic protests over the country’s controversial census. Distribution of most foreign aid has been suspended, creating an even more desperate situation in the camps.
Free admission. Open to the public. Limited Seating.
