Underwater Cultural Heritage: Sayan Praicharnjit

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and University of Hawaii are hosting the 2nd Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Underwater Cultural Heritage in May 2014. As part of this international event, members of the community are invited to participate in the Keynote Address, which is free and open to the public.

Professor Praicharnjit is a specialist in community archaeology, archaeology of ancient Thai ceramics, archaeology of Lan Na Northern Siam, and underwater archaeology in Thailand. He was an official archaeologist at the Thai Fine Arts Department for 18 years, working as Head of the Underwater Archaeology Sub-Division from 1989-1993. During 1992-2005, while working at the Faculty of Social Administration, Thammasat University, he conducted participative research and innovated a field of Community Archaeology for the Thai Community Development discipline. During 2008-2011, he was Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology, Silpakorn University. In 2011, he moved back to become a Professor at the Faculty of Social Administration, Thammasat University.

He has published more than 20 books related to archaeology and community development in Thailand, with four of them focusing on underwater archaeology in Thailand.

At present, Dr. Praicharnjit is focused on community archaeology and participative archaeology for the purposes of people empowerment and the progress of archaeological and cultural heritage management in Thailand.

In 2013, the Toyota Thailand Award Committee recognized Dr. Praicharnjit with its best academic book award for his book, “Archaeology of Thai Ceramics: Lan Na and Suphanburi Kiln Complexes.”
