Exploring GIS Data and Making Simple Maps

The goal of this free workshop is to understand the types of GIS data, GIS data structures, and to learn make simple maps using GIS Software. We will be using ArcGIS 10.2.

This 8-hour free workshop is targeted to individuals with little or no prior GIS experience. There will be two sessions, each session is 4 hours. Participant needs to attend both sessions.

Requirement: Must be comfortable with Windows environment. Familiarity with Excel or database software will be helpful.

Expectations:

After attending the workshop individual should be able to

1. understand the characteristics of GIS data

2. download GIS data

3. visualize GIS data in ArcGIS

4. symbolize GIS data

5. create simple maps with map elements and,

6. export maps to different output formats (for example pdf, jpg, tiff or bmp) to use it for presentation purposes

Space in the workshop is very limited and is restricted to UH Manoa faculty, students, and staff only.
