The Center for Korean Studies fall film series, presenting cinematic representations of apartment life in contemporary South Korea, continues with a screening of 301/302 (삼공일 삼공이, 1996), directed by Park Chul-Soo. The title of the film refers to the respective apartment numbers of two women who live in them. The story begins as a detective calls Song-hee at 301 to question her about the disappearance of Yoon-hee, the resident of 302. Song-hee, a compulsive cook, takes pleasure in caring for her husband, but he ignores her efforts. Disappointed, she becomes a binge eater. Yoon-hee, who lives next door, is a writer suffering from anorexia. As a child, she was sexually abused by her stepfather and has found herself disgusted by both food and the act of intercourse. Their tragic pasts and food disorders bring them together, but each pursues happiness in completely different ways.
