“Oceanographic Research in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone - Status and Opportunities”

The Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone in the North Pacific hosts extensive deposits of ferro-manganese nodules, a source of valuable metals. The growing commercial interest in mining these nodules is stimulating a spurt of research activities that are unprecedented in their scope, complexity, scale and duration, and occurring in a unique regulatory context. These activities, their context and the opportunities they offer to the oceanographic research community are presented.
