What's Next for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)?

After a week of intensive meetings on Maui, the 12 trade ministers negotiating the sweeping Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement announced on Friday that, while progress has been made, several difficult issues remain to be resolved before an agreement can be inked. In this special roundtable discussion, EWC Nonresident Senior Fellow Michael Plummer will discuss the implications of the Maui meeting’s outcome, as well as economic perspectives on the TPP deal as a whole.

An economist specializing in Asia Pacific trade, Dr. Plummer has been a co-author of extensive studies gauging the potential economic impact of the TPP agreement. He has been Director of the American Committee on Asian Economic Studies; head of the Development Division at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); editor in chief of the Journal of Asian Economics; lecturer and adviser to the Asian Development Bank; and adviser to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins SAIS, he held positions at Brandeis University and Kobe University in Japan. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Michigan State University.
