Good Government: Industrial Policy in Economic Development

This public lecture will draw on historical examples from Europe and the United States as well as more recent policies in Latin America, India and China to answer a number of questions, such as
$ What is better: an activist or a Laissez-faire stance toward economy?
$ How can economic development and growth be accelerated?
$ How can clean energy and more innovation be promoted?
$ What were some successes and failures with activist policies?
Presented by Ann E. Harrison, the William H. Wurster Professor of Multinational Management and Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Professor Harrison spent two years in Washington D.C. as the Director of Development Policy at the World Bank. She is currently serving as the US representative to the United Nations Committee on Development Policy. Her research is in the areas of emerging markets, multinational firms, international trade, productivity, and labor markets. Professor Harrison received her PhD in Economics from Princeton University and BA from the UC, Berkeley.
