Bollywood Mondays: Masaan (2015)

March 14, 3:30pm - 5:30pm
Mānoa Campus, Marine Sciences Building (MSB) 100 Add to Calendar

'Masaan' (meaning crematorium) is set in the legendary city of Varanasi, colorfully filmed alongside the famous ghats of the holy river Ganges, where Hindus seek to cremate their dead. The movie's characters live in a rapidly transforming India, but yet struggle against rigid social conventions deeply steeped in the traditional town.

Caste, class, gender, sex, corruption, and morality--underlined by themes of death and liberation--all intersect in 'Masaan'.

Deepak, son of a low-caste corpse burner, falls in love with upper class Shaalu. Meanwhile, Devi, caught in a tryst with a man who is not her husband, faces retribution from the authorities and a father who vacillates between shame and a moral duty to help her.

The characters' stories are haunting and beautiful, and offer a meditation on what has always been, and what might be possible in life.

This is the fourth movie in the 15th UH Bollywood film series, running on occasional Monday afternoons this spring. For a copy of the film series schedule for the semester, please see the contact information below.
