Waikiki Beach Management and Planning

May 19, 12:00pm - 1:00pm
Waikiki Aquarium, 2777 Kalakaua Ave Honolulu, HI 96815 Add to Calendar

Waikiki Beach is a globally recognized icon of Hawaii and is the state’s largest tourist destination. The area generates approximately 42 percent of the state’s visitor industry revenue and is responsible for eight percent ($5 billion) of the gross state product. Beaches are a primary attraction for visitors to Waikiki but are undergoing long-term coastal erosion and beach loss.

The seminar will highlight how the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program, in partnership with the Waikiki Beach Special Improvement District Association, has identified strategies for the development and implementation of a beach management plan for Waikiki. The primary purpose of such a management district plan is to identify, assess, and prioritize beach management projects and policies in Waikiki.
