Featuring Professor Ryaas Rasyid and Professor Bahtiar Effendy.
Two top political scientists from Indonesia will talk about the current state of play in Indonesian politics. Professor Rasyid will focus on the last two years under President Widodo and the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial race which many think will impact the 2019 presidential election. Professor Effendy will address the disheartening state of Islamic parties in Indonesian politics, including their inability to unite behind their own candidates in that same highly-contested gubernatorial race.
Ryaas Rasyid is a professor of political science at the Institute for Government Studies where he earlier served as Rector under President Soeharto. Under President Habibie he was Director General for Public Administration and Regional Autonomy and Secretary General pro-tem, Ministry of Home Affairs. Under President Wahid, he was Minister for Regional Autonomy and Minister for Bureaucratic Reform. He later served in Parliament and on the Yudhoyono Presidential Advisory Council.During 1981-83, he pursued a Master's degree in Economics and Business at the University of Hawaii at Manoa on an EWC grant. In 1994 he earned his PhD in Political Science from UHM.
Bahtiar Effendy, professor of political science at the State Islamic University in Jakarta, earned his PhD from Ohio State University in 1994. His many books include Islam and the State in Indonesia (2003), Islam in Contemporary Indonesian Politics (2006), Putting All the Cards on the Table: Trust as a Factor in the War Against Terror (2008), Pangreh Praja During the Japanese Occupation (2009), and Insight: Essays on Islam and Public Affairs (2016). Currently he is involved in developing an international Islamic university in Indonesia.
