Connecting Works of the Past to the Future at the Bishop Museum
February 2, 12:00pm - 1:15pmMānoa Campus, Kuykendall 410
Throughout the Pacific, archaeologists and ethnographers documented people, places, and cultural landscapes as they carried out pioneering anthropological fieldwork during the early 20th century. Today, many archival collections of documents and photographs that resulted from these works are housed in museums and repositories, including the Bishop Museum. Using three case studies (Alfred Metraux Collection, Rapa Nui, Kenneth P. Emory Collection, Nihoa, and John F.G. Stokes Collection, Moloka‘i ), this paper explores the ways in which these collections provide insights into the past and inform the future.
