“The effect of microbial communities on life in the Phoenix Island’s Deep Sea”

The Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA) is the largest and deepest UNESCO World Heritage Site on the planet. PIPA is a unique no-take archipelago that offers the opportunity to examine ecosystems and processes in the absence of anthropogenic impact. With support from NOAA and the Schmidt Ocean Institute, a 30-day cruise to PIPA will take place leaving from Honolulu on Oct 5. Among the multitude of projects, we will be characterizing microbial community composition and the cell wall structures of bacteria that allow for survival in the deep sea. Structural elucidation of bacterial cell wall structures present in the deep sea will facilitate future analysis of how these structures effect the immune responses of marine animals.
