Join is for a free screening and discussion of the The Blue Kite! The Blue Kite (1993) explores many key events in modern Chinese history, including The Hundred Flowers Campaign, The Great Leap Forward, and The Cultural Revolution, from the point of view of a young boy growing up in Beijing in the 1950s and 1960s. Tian and his parents’ story reveals the intersections among individual, family, and political life in increasingly oppressive Maoist China. The Blue Kite was directed by Tian Zhuangzhuang, a member of the so-called Fifth Generation of students who graduated from the Beijing Film Academy after it reopened following the Cultural Revolution. It has never been shown in Mainland China but has been screened at multiple international film festivals and won a number of awards, including Best Feature Film at the 1993 Hawaii International Film Festival.
