Abstract:
Here I will share some of the recent developments in satellite image processing that apply to the interests of Central Pacific Region, especially Hawaii. The first is ‘MIMIC-TPW’, a near-seamless morphological composite of polar-orbiting satellite retrievals of water vapor, which is used to diagnose atmospheric rivers, favorable environments for hurricanes and the influence of dry air masses. The second is ‘ARCHER’ and ‘MIMIC-TC’, which are online tools to track (sometimes ambiguous) tropical cyclone centers and display them in motion. The third is the gravity wave detection product, which is a simple but revealing enhancement of Himawari-8 AHI and GOES-16/17 ABI imagery. It shows the possible precursors of aircraft turbulence at the limit of infrared resolution, which is a capability that was not even anticipated at the instrument debut.
