“Studies of circulation, deep water formation and ice/ocean interaction in the polar seas using tracers”

Natural and anthropogenic trace substances are being used routinely to study ocean circulation, water mass formation and exchange, and interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere and cryosphere. In this presentations results from tracer studies of ocean dynamics and ocean/ice interaction in the high-latitude oceans will be discussed. Specific topics include deep water formation rates in the Arctic Ocean, the stability of the circulation of the warm Atlantic water under the retreating Arctic sea ice cover, and melting of glacial ice underneath the Antarctic floating ice shelves.
