“Cultural Differences in China through Folk Songs: A Singer’s Story”

by Liu Minhui 刘敏辉, A National First-class Solo Singer from China’s Flag Art Troupe, Chengdu Military Region

Talk will be in Chinese with interpretation into English.

Tuesday, March 5, 2019, 4:15 pm, Moore Hall 109, 1890 East-West Rd, UHM

Folk songs grew out of unique cultural experiences and, therefore, may shed light on our understanding of culture. China, which is home to 56 ethnic groups, has a diversity of regional cultures, which have given rise to folk songs of varying themes and styles. Folks songs in China’s east and west, north and south, all have their distinctive flavors. The talk will showcase how Chinese folk songs reflect cultural differences in different regions from the perspective of a singer. Liu Minhui will, along with her students, perform seven folk songs from Sichuan (Southwest China), Xinjiang (Northwest China), Inner Mongolia (North China), Anhui (East China), Shanxi (Northwest China), and Jiangsu (East China). She will also play some video clips of folk song performances. Some songs reflect the same theme (such as love), but their renditions are quite different. Other songs reflect a region-specific theme. In the talk, Liu will explain the characteristics and cultural backgrounds of each song and will compare the folk songs from different regions. At the end of the talk, Liu will teach everyone to sing the folksong Jasmine Flower, which is perhaps one of the most famous Chinese folk songs originating in Jiangsu.

Liu Minhui, who graduated from the People’s Liberation Army Academy of Art, is a national first-class solo singer with the Flag Art Troupe of the Chengdu Military Region. She is currently director of the Melody Art Troupe, based in Chengdu, China. A singer for 43 years, she has abundant teaching experience and has taught many students. As the chairwoman of Sichuan Hengye Education and Culture Co., Ltd., she visited top universities in the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, and Europe. Her achievement is highly recognized by professionals from all over the world.
