Huia Maori Publishers - Robyn Bargh Colloquium

The English Department, Hawaii Review, and Ka Ipu o Lono Indigenous Pacific Press present a colloquium with Huia Publishers founder Robyn Bargh. || Huia Publishers was established in 1991 to produce beautiful books and resources that share diverse Maori perspectives, voices, realities and aspirations. Our aim is to provide a mirror for Maori to reflect and interpret our experiences, and to take these stories to the world. || This presentation will discuss three themes: || 1. Huia as an independent commercial publishing business. I will outline the challenges and opportunities that arose for Huia in the years 1991 – 2018. || 2. Huia as publisher - developing and publishing diverse Maori narratives, building on
our culture and language. One of the driving motivations for the establishment of
Huia was for Maori narratives in English and in Maori language to be included in New Zealand literature. In this section I will give an overview of the range of books being published and the challenges we have faced. || 3. Capability building – 25 years of identifying and developing Maori writers. I will describe the Pikihuia programme for Maori writers and the successes of those writers.
