Join the International Cultural Studies Program as Dr. Sean Smith presents on "The Rhetoric of Science in the Construction of Buddhist Modernism”

A common trope of Buddhist modernism is that Buddhism isn’t a religion but rather a life-path or a mind-science. Many Buddhologists have been rightly critical of this way of construing Buddhism by pointing out that Buddhism is a historical phenomenon that can only be properly understood in its local cultural contexts. Dr. Smith offers some constructive thoughts about how arguments internal to Buddhist philosophy can help us interpret Buddhism as a welcome philosophical interlocutor with modern science while acknowledging its historicity.
