"Between Abhinavagupta and Daya Krishna: Krishnachandra Bhattacharyya on the Problem of Other Minds"

The "Problem of Other Minds" arises in Indian philosophy as well as Western philosophy. But Indian philosophers, unlike most Western philosophers, approach the problem through an examination of intersubjectivity, focusing on the fact of address, the fact that we speak to one another. In this talk, we compare the attempts to solve the problem of other minds by Abhinavagupta (10th century) and two twentieth century Indian philosophers—Krishnachandra Bhattacharyya and Daya Krishna. We argue that while Abhinavagupta and Daya Krishna contribute important insights, only K. C. Bhattacharyya solves the problem.

Speakers: Nalini Bhushan and Jay L. Garfield teach philosophy at Smith College. They collaborate on research addressing modern Indian philosophy. Bhushan and Garfield are co-editors of Indian Philosophy in English from Renaissance to Independence and Contrary Thinking: Selected Essays of Daya Krishna, and are co-authors of Minds Without Fear: Philosophy in the Indian Renaissance.
