Stars (appropriate for ages 9 and up)
Dates: February 10, March 9
Time: 7 p.m. (and 8 p. m. on Feb 10 only)

Show Description - Every star has a story. Some are as old as time, faint and almost forgotten. Others burn bright and end their lives in powerful explosions. New stars are created every day, born of vast clouds of gas and dust. Through every phase of their existence, stars release the energy that powers the Universe. Journey to the farthest reaches of our galaxy and experience both the awesome beauty and destructive power of STARS.

The stunning animation highlighted by astronauts, spacecraft, telescopes, nebulas, clusters, and more, was created by the talented team of the National Space Centre (Leicester, UK). This dramatic program features the voice talent of Mark Hamill. The Nashville Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Albert-George Schram, resident conductor, performed part of the STARS soundtrack.

	<div class="descr">February 11 - March 3, 2012
Opening Reception: Saturday, February 11, 9:00 - 11:00 am

Kinu, Japanese for silk, is the longest fiber; unreeled from the cocoons of moths nurtured on a diet of mulberry tree leaves. Kapa, bark cloth, reached its zenith in Hawaii where incised beaters watermarked and felted together strips of mulberry&apos;s inner bark and bamboo printers captured the energy of negative spaces of printed patterns with dyes made from ash, tubers, flowers, coral and earth.

Akihiko Izukura, visiting artist from Kyoto, and kapa practitioner Moana Eisele shared their fiber working and natural dyeing experiences with other veteran dyers, weavers and kapa makers in a recent intensive gathering organized by TEMARI, Center for Asian and Pacific Arts and the Lyon Arboretum.

Most had pursued their craft for over 30 - 40 years. Younger novice kapa makers who spoke fluent Hawaiian also contributed. All participants surmounted language challenges, made dyes from plants gathered from the Arboretum, shared dyes that from materials grown in their gardens and prepared silk from cocoons spun on the Big Island.

This intimate exhibition displays shapes formed with kinu and kapa, colored with natural dyes.  It reflects the workshop&apos;s energy.  As Eisele said on the first day, &quot;We are sharing not only techniques, but also passing on our knowledge.&quot;  Pointing to the three younger artists, she added, &quot;You are the most important people here.&quot;

<div class="descr">Under the lens of rising development and persisting dependence on non-renewable energy sources we are facing the possibility for an irreversible economic collapse of island life. Our response to development is energy innovation and roadblocking solutions on the island of Oahu. We will explore the the detriments of the future of The University of Hawaii at Manoa if there is no change in behavior towards energy consumption and if energy efficiency goes unaddressed. The gravity of this situation calls for discussion, debate, and re-examination of the current state of affairs for Hawaii's clean energy challenge. For this reason, this forum will empower students and community members to share research and discuss the implications that will promote a student led campaign that produces a state with energy in dependency by the year 2030. Our clean energy renaissance values the purposeful behavior of making trade-offs for the next alternative energy. With aspirations to create an action plan afterwards, this movement will mark a change in campus priorities and produce results.

Why?
Learn about energy consumption on campus and the likelihood of drastic tuition increase.

Learn from philosophers, business leaders, engineers, and government officials about innovative solutions for alternative energy.

Enjoy the artistic light bulb sculptures that brighten up this serious issue.

Enjoy the showcases by RevoluSun and The Blue Planet Foundation.

Green roofs do more than just create an attractive outdoor space on an otherwise undeveloped surface. They also protect the roof from harmful UV rays and temperature fluctuations, reduce the urban heat island effect, and insulate the building which increases energy efficiency. Hawaii has both the highest average temperature and highest energy cost in the nation. This makes Hawaii the most expensive state to run a HVAC system. Hawaii is also highly dependent upon imported food products which creates a business opportunity for roof based farming. Barriers to widespread adoption of green roofs in Hawaii will be discussed as well as potential opportunities for innovation and development.</div>

Within the framework of "multiple modernities," this conference will explore multi-layered arrays of Korean modernity by looking at different areas in society and culture that went through a metamorphosis as Korea reinvented itself as a modern state-nation during the colonial period. Individual conference papers will explore various forms of selectivity, creativity, inventiveness, imaginary resourcefulness, and visions of Koreans engaged in crafting their own brands of modernity. The focus of the conference will be the cultural modernity projects nurtured and cultivated in the urban setting of Korea in the decades of the 1920s and the 1930s, when such modern transformation was most vigorously pursued and propagated and its achievements most visible and vibrant.</div>

<div class="descr">The Department of Physics and Astronomy Colloquium: Prof. Steve Nahn, MIT Dept. of Physics, to speak on "Where art thou, O Higgs?"
Abstract:
The world's most powerful particle accelerator, the Large Hadron
Collider (LHC), has just finished its second year of proton proton
collisions at center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, increasing the data
sample by a factor of ~125. So, the world is waiting (and starting
to get impatient) for the answer to one of the flagship questions
addressed by the LHC: what is the mechanism by which fundamental
fermions and bosons are endowed with mass? There is a simple
hypothesis, embodied by the so called "Higgs Mechanism" embedded into
the Standard Model of particle physics, which requires one new
particle, giving experimenters at the LHC a quest: The hunt for the
Higgs. This talk will elaborate on why this is an interesting
question for the LHC, demonstrate a bit of what it takes in terms of
experimentation to answer the question, and discuss the current state
of the hunt.</div>

<div class="descr">Professor Jorg Nagler of the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena will present "The Transnationsl Significance of the American Civil War" as the next event in the History Workshop, "War and Society: Considering Justice, Violence, and the Military in History." The Civil War not only was the culmination point of a hitherto "unfinished nation" and the central crisis in American history but also had significant international or even global ramifications that encompassed political, social, economic and military dimensions. In the age of nationalism and nation building, rising liberal democracies, the world simultaneously also experienced increasing globalized capitalist economies that became interdependent from each other. The American Civil War and its outcome were central to these transformations. With the liberations of over four millions slaves who had produced most of the world supply of raw cotton prior to 1861, manufactures had to find new supply areas and channels for the pivotal raw material for one of the world's largest industries. The globalization of the cotton empire was one of the results of the American Civil War. People in other nations could see that the massive struggle in the United States embodied conflicts that had been appearing in different forms throughout the world. Defining nationhood, deciding the future of unfree labor, inventing warfare for an industrial age, the possibilities and means of a democratic society to endure such a horrendous conflict, majorities versus minorities in a democratic process, the power of the central state, to name just a few pertinent issues, all these played out in the American Civil War, a conflict the world watched with high interest.</div>

<div class="descr">A Strategy for Accelerating the Development of Hydrological Models:
Societal Needs, Observational Requirements and Public Communication
Jay Famiglietti
UC Center for Hydrologic Modeling
Department of Earth System Science
University of California, Irvine
While the development of hydrological and land surface models has progressed
rapidly over the last few decades, a significant acceleration in model
development is required in order to address critical societal issues of water,
energy and food availability and security. In particular, major advances are
needed in the areas of observations (e.g. of water cycle variability and change, of
subsurface soils and hydrogeology, and of streamflow and groundwater levels),
model development (e.g. of models that integrate the major components of the
human and managed water cycles), data assimilation (e.g. of algorithms that can
readily incorporate in situ and remote observations of asynchronous space-time
frequency) and of a framework for integrating models and data (e.g. for access to
data and simulation results, for running models, and for performing analyses). In
this presentation we discuss these needs in detail, and highlight recent efforts in
California and at the national scale (i.e. with the Community Hydrologic Modeling
Platform [CHyMP]) to develop a modeling and data integration framework that
can be applied across scales up to continental and global scales. Finally, the
responsibility of the hydrologic research community to convey such important
observational and simulation needs to resource managers, environmental
decision and policy makers, and the general public, is underscored. </div>

<div class="descr"><strong><em>Physical Controls of Soil Moisture Across Space and Time Scales - Current Understanding and Future Opportunities!</em></strong>

by: Binayak P Mohanty, Ph.D., Professor (Focus: Soil Hydrology) Biological and Agricultural Engineering Texas A&M University, College Station, TX

<strong>Abstract:</strong>

Soil moisture is the natural state variable of the land surface critical to climate feedback, hydrology, and agriculture. Its temporal and spatial variability over catchment areas affects surface and subsurface runoff, modulates evaporation and transpiration, determines the extent of groundwater recharge and contaminant transport, and initiates or sustains feedback between the land surface and the atmosphere. At a particular point in time soil moisture content is influenced by: (1) the precipitation history, (2) the texture of the soil, which determines the water-holding capacity, (3) the slope of the land surface, which affects runoff and infiltration, and (4) the vegetation and land cover, which influences evapotranspiration and deep percolation. In other terms the partitioning of soil moisture to recharge to the groundwater, evapotranspiration to the atmosphere, and surface/subsurface runoff to the streams at different spatio-temporal scales and under different hydro-climatic conditions pose one of the greatest challenges to weather and climate prediction, water resources availability, sustainability, quality, and variability in agricultural, range and forested watersheds and hydro-climatic conditions. To date very few studies have been made to quantitatively understand the multi-scale dynamics of soil moisture in land-surface hydrologic systems. In this context we hypothesize that: 1) soil moisture variability is dominated by soil properties at the field scale, topographic features at the catchment/watershed scale, and vegetation characteristics and precipitation patterns at the regional scale and beyond; and 2) ensemble hydrologic fluxes (evapotranspiration, infiltration, and shallow ground water recharge) across the vadose zone at the corresponding scale can be effectively represented by one or more soil, topography, vegetation, or climate scale factors. Using ground-based and various active and passive microwave remote sensing measurements during the NASA field campaigns in the past decade including Southern Great Plains Experiments (SGP97, SGP99), Soil Moisture Experiment (SMEX02, SMEX05), and Cloud Land Atmosphere Interaction Study (CLASIC 2007), we test these hypotheses. Results of our ongoing study and the future need related to the better understanding of soil moisture controls, scaling properties, and effective soil hydraulic parameters at different scales will be presented.

Dr. Binayak Mohanty is a professor in Biological and Agricultural Engineering at Texas A&M University since 2001. Prior to joining Texas A&M, he worked at US Salinity Lab, Riverside, California for 8 years. He received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University in 1992. His research area includes vadose zone hydrology, soil moisture sensing, soil hydraulic properties, up and downscaling, preferential flow, and coupled biogeochemical processes. Dr. Mohanty has published about 100 journal papers and currently serves an associate editor of Water Resources Research and Vadose Zone Journal.</div>
