Director Prachya Pinkaew and fight film choreographer Panna Rittikrai, who brought us the classics Ong-bak (2003) and Tom Yum Goong (2005), are back with another die hard action flick! First timer Vismistananda (Zen) trained for years in preparation for this role in which she plays an autistic girl who goes on a mission to collect debts to save her ill mother, a course of action that puts her on a collision course with gangs of both the local Thai and Japanese varieties. Quentin Tarantino picked CHOCOLATE as one of his eight favorite films of 2009!

Abstract:

Temperature is an important factor regulating the rate of biological processes and, therefore, is likely to exert a selective pressure in the environment. The temperature response of carbon mineralization via bacterial sulfate reduction of polar, temperate and tropical marine sediments was studied in temperature-gradient incubations experiments by measuring sulfate reduction rates (SRR) using 35S-sulfate. Sediment slurries were incubated in a thermal gradient between -10°C and +50°C to cover the physiological temperature range of the active sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and the resulting temperature response profiles were used to characterize the competitiveness of SRB, in terms of relative SRR at in situ temperatures, the temperature dependence for energy metabolism of SRB and the correlation of cardinal temperatures of sulfate reduction and sediment temperatures. In polar regions, only temperatures close to the freezing point of the sediment limit the rates of sulfate reduction. In these environments SRB exhibited high metabolic rates of ca 10-17% of maximal potential rates at the in-situ temperature of 0°C. Similar relative SRR in temperate and tropical sediments were only observed at temperatures around 15-20°C. These observations imply psychrophilic adaptation of polar SRB and the predominance of mesophilic SRB in warmer latitudes. Further examination of the temperature dependency for sulfate reduction using Arrhenius plots in temperate sediments revealed that tropical sediments exhibited a more limited metabolic regulation at temperatures below 8-18°C and optimal temperature conditions for sulfate reduction closer to their ambient temperatures. Together, the inspection of the temperature responses for metabolic activity of SRB in marine sediments showed that temperature adaptations of SRB form a continuum with respect to their environmental latitude, which implies the potential of environmental temperatures for the selection of adaptive physiologies and for evolutionary divergence of microbiota in different latitudes.

The Geography Department, the Marine Option Program, and the Biology Program are partnering with the Sea Education Association to offer a Summer Session I, 2010 course in MARINE CONSERVATION onboard the sailing school vessel, the R.C. Seamans.

Students will spend three weeks onboard, learning to sail the vessel while assessing the state of marine conservation in Hawaii. They will visit the Kupuna Islands -- the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands -- which are surrounded by America's largest marine protected area, Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. They will then sail among the main Hawaiian Islands, through the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, stopping along the way to measure the health of Hawaii's ocean waters and marine life. Students will look at how communities, fishermen, elders, visitors, school kids, and scientists are responding to the challenge of living sustainably with our oceans.

Research projects conducted while underway will address coral reef health, sustainable fisheries, rebuilding marine wildlife populations, and preventing marine debris and adverse impacts of overuse. Students will consider how the Polynesian ancestors used their knowledge to find the Hawaiian Islands and to manage their impacts on the reefs and marine life.

Faculty include Dr. Cindy Hunter, UHM Biology Program; Dr. Jan Witting, SEA; Prof. Alison Rieser, Dept. of Geography, Ocean Policy Program; and Dr. David Hyrenbach, Hawaii Pacific University. Field trips on the islands will be conducted by guest lecturers and UHM Sea Grant College faculty.

Applications will be made available at the informational session. Six and eight-credit options are possible.

The Tanjung Tanah code of law, dating to the late 14th century, was issued by the Maharaja of Dharmasraya, the former capital of the Malayu kingdom. This manuscript, written in both Sanskrit and Malay in Pallavo-Nusantaric script on bark paper, was a few centuries later reissued by the Sultan of Jambi, but this time on paper and in Arabic-Malay script. The two manuscripts, both in the possession of the same family, not only give us interesting insights into the changes that the Malay language underwent from the 14th to the 18th century, but also teach us the impact of Islamic law on the legal system of a Sumatran Malay polity.

&quot;Cross-dressing and Silk Road Fashion in the Early Tang&quot;

A talk by Kate Lingley

Kate Lingley is Assistant Professor of Chinese Art History in the Department of Art and Art History, University of Hawai'i at M&#257;noa. Her research focuses on the social history of Buddhist art in early medieval China.

Fashionable dress among aristocratic women of the early Tang dynasty (c. 618-751) was characterized by a fad for Central Asian-derived styles. This was part of a larger trend in which Silk Road exotica and luxury goods were prized by the upper classes in the Tang empire. Tang women&apos;s cross-cultural styles were a subject of considerable anxiety among social conservatives, who objected to women dressing like &quot;barbarians&apos; wives.&quot; But Tang images of women reveal that they also sometimes dressed in contemporary men&apos;s clothing, a practice which seems to have attracted much less commentary. Given that men&apos;s dress of the Tang period was clearly derived from earlier Central Asian models, it is striking that these incidents of cross-dressing do not seem to have provoked the same cultural anxiety. The fact that they did not illustrates the degree to which Tang men&apos;s dress had become decoupled from its ethnic origins, while Tang women&apos;s dress still maintained its exotic flavor. The lack of anxiety over the blurring of gender roles in this case also sheds light on the relative freedom granted to women in the early Tang dynasty, as compared to more strictly Confucian periods such as the earlier Han.

Both women are Chamoru and were born and raised on the island of Guåhan (Guam).
Kicho&apos;cho&apos; and Cruz will be reading pieces they have collaborated on as well as their own individual poetry. Much of their work centers on the impact U.S. militarization and colonialism have had on their home island community of Guåhan and the other Micronesian islands, much of which is manifest in social, economic, and environmental injustice. Their work also focuses on Chamoru culture and identity. Immediately following the reading, there will be a facilitated discussion.

Food will be served (sponsored by the UH Marianas Club and C.E.J.E.). Open free to the public!

SUNKEN WARBIRDS: The Legacy of Naval Aviation in the Pacific is the theme of this year&apos;s symposium. Naval aviation holds a special place in the history of Hawai&apos;i and the Pacific. From the early flying boats to carrier aircraft of World War II and beyond, advancements in aviation technology served to help shape the region. This history is reflected in the physical remains of crashed aircraft, often unseen beneath the ocean&apos;s surface.

Two days of public presentations by noted regional and international specialists will be held at the NOAA Sanctuary Hawaii Kai conference facility February 13-14, with a field trip to the Pacific Aviation Museum on Monday February 15. Highlights include presentations involving Grumman aircraft, PBY-4 and PBY-5 Catalina flying boats, a Japanese bomber in the Solomon Islands, and a Douglas TBD-1 &quot;Devastator&quot; torpedo bomber, as well as updates on continuing archaeological fieldwork from the main and Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. This is Hawai&apos;i&apos;s only annual event devoted to maritime history and underwater discoveries!

This year&apos;s keynote speaker will be Kenneth DeHoff, Executive Director of the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island. Mr. DeHoff, a former Army pilot, will give an illustrated talk on current and future activities at the Pacific Aviation Museum. The keynote talk will be held Friday evening, February 12th on the University of Hawai&apos;i&apos;s Manoa campus, BusAd Building Room A-101 (Corner of University and Maile Way) at 7:00 PM.
Research Oceanographer, Rka Domokos from the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center will present a seminar titled, "Characterization of the Physical Environment at Cross Seamount and its Effects on Bigeye Tuna and its Forage, Micronekton" on Thursday, February 18th, 2010 in MSB 100 at 3:00 PM.

Abstract:

Cross seamount in the Hawaiian archipelago is known to aggregate juvenile and subadult bigeye tuna, a population which is heavily targeted by the local fishery. In this study the author investigates the effects of Cross Seamount on the physical environment and the consequences of these effects on bigeye tuna and its forage, micronekton. Shipboard observations show that mean currents impinging on the seamount topography result in a predominantly anticyclonic flow around the flanks and doming isopycnals over the plateau, consistent with the formation of trapped Taylor cones, while occasional depression of isopycnals over the plateau in combination with uplifting at the flanks indicate the presence of secondary circulation. Dominant semi-diurnal tides and frequent anticyclonic eddies result in a more prominent Taylor cone formation over the seamount. Bioacoustics data show that micronekton biomass is significantly higher and composed of relatively smaller organisms at the plateau and flanks of the seamount than in the nearby environment, with effects not extending to further than ~5 km away from the plateau's edge. Stronger anticyclonic circulation due to tidal flow and eddies result in a further increase in micronekton biomass. Micronekton migrate between the shallow and the deep scattering layers at the downstream and upstream edge of the plateau, actively swimming against the currents. Differences in composition and active association with the seamount indicate the presence of resident species. The increased micronekton biomass is presumably a response to increased presence of their forage, zooplankton, which are most likely swept into and trapped at the seamount environment by the anticyclonic flow. Bigeye tuna is tightly associated with the 400-m deep plateau and slopes not deeper than ~500 m. Acoustic data indicate that bigeye exhibit aggregated deep diving behavior over the plateau. Bigeye appear at dawn at the upcurrent edge of the plateau to feed on specific micronekton layers which are migrating downward from the shallow scattering layer. At this time, bigeye occupy a very small area of the plateau, are highly mobile, and form very loose aggregations. During the morning hours, bigeye spread over a larger area of the plateau, still feeding. During the afternoon and early evening, bigeye occupy the entire area of the plateau and tend to form thicker aggregations. At around sunset, thick aggregations of bigeye start dispersing and seemingly leave the plateau, to appear next dawn again feeding at the upcurrent edge. It is likely that forming tight aggregations that are spread over the entire area of the plateau results in a decrease in their detectability as these types of aggregations would be easy to miss during acoustic transects.

Consumer Preference for Olive Oil in Central Tirana, Albania

Consumer behavior and preferences have always been an important part of producing and marketing products in any industry. For the olive oil industry in Albania, incorporating consumer preferences will benefit the domestic industry in marketing their products and outcompeting imported olive oil to increase domestic market share. The goal of this study was to examine consumer preferences for olive oil attributes or characteristics such as cost, type, and taste and how these are used to make purchasing decisions, as well as to look at the types of consumers that prefer specific attribute combinations. A Conjoint Choice Experiment (CCE) was used to design the survey and latent class approach used to analyze the data.

The results of this study show that there is a high preference for Albanian olive oil and that there are small niche markets for specific types of olive oils. This study also finds that there is a gap between preference and actual consumer behavior in regards to olive oil. Stakeholders need to be aware of the gap and pursue ways to ensure that their products meet the preferences of its consumers. The government also needs to play a role in supporting the local industry through the provision of a standard quality level for Albanian olive oil for its domestic and export market.

Often times simple questions have complicated answers. How one comes to identify as a boy or girl, man or woman seems to be one of those simple questions with a complicated answer. Most often the answer reduces itself to a discussion of nature versus nurture. In this talk, Milton Diamond will integrate evidence from both nature and nurture. The talk will cover typical psychosexual development as well as that of different trans and intersex conditions and differentiate sexual identity from gender identity.

<i>Department of Geography, University of Washington</i>

New geopolitical concerns involve the control of ungoverned space and the effective administration of populations. In this paper, I investigate the broken windows language of danger and disorder, and also some of the specific technical practices of broken windows policing through which a sense of order and effective entrepreneurial governance is transmitted. By tracing the path of broken windows discourse and technical practices from New York to Iraq, I further document some of the specific technologies and players through which ideas such as these can travel and become institutionalized globally. I argue finally that broken windows policing, as an imaginative geographical and geopolitical scripting of the perils of chaotic and ungoverned space, helps to produce new forms of governance through security, which at the same time facilitates the formation and entrenchment of neoliberal practices and subjectivities worldwide.

Aid Enclaving and the Emergent Geoeconomics of Global Health
<i>Co-hosted with Political Science</i>

Dr. Matthew Sparke, Professor
<i>Department of Geography, University of Washington</i>

Development aid in the Cold War was traditionally shaped by geopolitical concerns about superpower hegemony in the developing world. Today development assistance is shaped and targeted instead by rather different geoeconomic maps and visions of the world. Notable for marking this trend has been the recent shift to development assistance for health and, most remarkably, the dramatic rise in influence of private-sector-led global health interventions. This presentation examines the geographical targeting and distribution of this so-called &#699;verticalized&apos; global health assistance, and points in particular to the degree to which it has been marked by enclaving effects. Economic enclaving, political enclaving and ethical enclaving are all involved, and they are all processes that call for enquiry in relation to the legacies of structural adjustment and the continuing structuring effects - both macro and micro - of neoliberalization. Along the way, we see how utopian imaginations of aid enclaves becoming models for improving health for all become transformed in practice into dystopian sites of dispossession, embodied inequality and the return of geopolitics in the form of a new pastoral power.

Its formation and evolution are closely linked to the development of Zhouyi, Taoism, Confucianism and Chan. This lecture will discuss and analyze the aesthetic features and unique meaning of Implicit Beauty as illustrated by Chinese poetry, painting, sculpture and other artistic forms. I shall interpret and compare a series of aesthetics concepts, such as implicitness, innerness, hiddenness, reservedness, dimness and chaos in Chinese aesthetics. I shall also undertake a comprehensive analysis of the distinction and relations among important Chinese artistic aesthetic propositions bearing on Implicit Beauty, Yin and Soft Beauty, Dim Beauty, Imaginary Beauty and Beauty of Artistic Conception, showing their aesthetic essence and artistic spirit.
