Hydrogen R&D: A How-To and Not-To-Guide by John Benemann, Benemann Associates, Walnut Creek, CA. Hydrogen R&D was a key science and technology platform for both major parties in the recent presidential election, and renewable hydrogen production was mandated by Congress as the highest priority for hydrogen R&D. Biological, specifically photobiological hydrogen, has now become a major focus in renewable hydrogen production by the U.S. Dept. of Energy, with almost $10 million in project awards made during the present Fiscal Year, including substantial funding for basic research programs. Over the past three decades various mechanisms have been proposed and studied to produce hydrogen with microalgae and photosynthetic bacteria. This talk will review past progress, summarize the current status and suggest future prospects, providing case examples for promising and not-so-promising approaches to producing hydrogen from water with sunlight.
