"Tungsten oxide Films for Solar-Powered Water-Splitting Devicis" by Bjorn Marsen, Assistant Researcher, Hawaii Natural Energy Institute, SOEST, UHM. A primer will be given on the renewable production of hydrogen by hybrid photoelectrochemical/photovoltaic devices. In this research effort, metal oxides are being investigated as candidate materials for the photoelectrochemical junction. The current focus is on tungsten oxide films fabricated by reactive sputtering. The physical properties of these films are correlated with photocurrent performance and with the sputter deposition parameters. A maximum photocurrent of 2.8 mA/cm2 was observed in 0.33M H3PO4 under 1-sun illumination, exceeding published results for tungsten oxide material. Implications for the development of practical water-splitting devices based on such WO3 films are discussed.
