"That's not fair!" - Fairness, bias, and differential item functioning in language testing.
Carsten Roever, Visiting Colleague (DSLS), Department of Linguistics & Applied Linguistics The University of Melbourne.
Investigations of test bias have been common in psychometrics for more than 20 years but are still rare in language testing. I will talk about how fairness, bias, and differential item functioning (DIF) are interrelated, how DIF can be detected, what bias research has been done in language testing, and how bias can and cannot be avoided. I will also briefly discuss future research directions for DIF and bias analysis in language testing.
