Importance of Story-Making, a panel discussion

December 12, 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Manoa Ballroom, Fifth Floor, Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i

Importance of Story-Making is a panel discussion presented by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i and the University of Hawai'i Art Gallery in conjunction with the exhibition "Reconstructing Memories," currently on view at the UH Art Gallery. By considering core issues of constructing historical narratives, the twelve artists in this exhibition recreated family or collective history and at the same time, question the nature of the historical process.

The panel discussion will focus on the importance of remembering and telling stories of the past, the connections that are made, and the feelings that are shared between the storyteller and the recipient. There will be an emphasis on stories that may not have been brought to the forefront of our collective memory and history, and the reasons why the stories have been muted. The audience will be invited to participate in a question and answer session. Moderator: Judge Riki May Amano (Ret.), President and Executive Director, Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i.

Panelists: Aaron Kerner, Curator of Reconstructing Memories; Kaili Chun and Katsushige Nakahashi, Artists in Reconstructing Memories; Warren Nishimoto, Director of the Center for Oral History, UHM; Mariko Miho, Director of Development for Community Colleges, UHF. Translator: John Szostak, Assistant Professor of Japanese art history, UHM.
