Burning the Zero Airplane, Closing of Reconstructing Memories

December 13, 1:30pm - 4:00pm
Manoa Campus, UH Art Gallery; McCarthy Mall; Kennedy Theater; Hawai'i Hall

For the exhibition "Reconstructing Memories," 12 artists consider the relationship between memory and history, and demonstrate the fragility and tenuous nature of human memory, upon which history is based. By considering core issues of constructing historical narratives and the obscuring of cultural and personal memory, the artists were able to recreate family or collective history and at the same time, question the nature of the historical process.

The artists include: Katsushige Nakahashi (Japan); Sally Clark, Binh Danh, Ian Everard, James Fee, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, Robin Kandel, (U.S); and Gaye Chan, Kaili Chun, John Morita, Masami Teraoka, and Lynne Yamamoto (Hawai'i). Aaron Kerner, assistant professor, Cinema Department at San Francisco State University, is curator of "Reconstructing Memories."

The procession and burning of artist Katsushige Nakahashi's life-sized replica of a Zero airplane heralds the closing of the exhibition "Reconstructing Memories." Symbolizing a spiritual renewal and rebirth, the burning commemorates the anniversary of the death of the Japanese pilot who crash-landed his Zero on Ni'ihau after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

The schedule for December 13 is as follows: 1:30 the Zero will leave the University of Hawai'i Art Gallery; proceed eastward on McCarthy Mall to Kennedy Theater; circle the Peace Monument; return to the mall; proceed west towards Varney Circle and to the site of a former WWII bomb shelter on the lawn of Hawai'i Hall. At approximately 2:00 the Zero will be set ablaze.

Following the burning, refreshments will be served at the University of Hawai'i Art Gallery.
