Telling the Story: Blacks in America and the Pacific ~ The history of race in America is a difficult matter for public discussion even in the 21st century. It is at the heart of the nation’s most striking contradictions of slavery and colonialism, and the most volatile questions of national identity.

The Second Winter Institute will bring together distinguished scholars and practitioners from universities, museums, national parks, and other public venues in Hawaii, the Pacific and the continental United States to explore critical race issues, and connect indigenous issues to broad racial concerns, honoring the struggles of the people of the Pacific. The conference will provide an opportunity for productive public dialog on these topics that is crucial for promoting racial understanding in contemporary society.

The keynote speaker, Lonnie Bunch, founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture planned for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. will open the Second Winter Institute at a gala dinner at the Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu.
