Special Water Seminar

January 26, 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Manoa Campus, HIG 110

"The National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee, India" K.D. Sharma, director, National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee, India. Abstract: The National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), a premier autonomous science and technology institute under the Societies Act funded by the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India, has provided innovative and effective research and development for hazard-free sustainable development and management of water and water-related disasters in the country since 1979.

The Institute has made significant contributions in basic, applied and strategic research; software development; technology transfer, and consultancy, and participates in UNESCO's International Hydrological Programme on behalf of India.

Over the past 27 years, the Institute has worked on flood management, shifting of river courses, water availability, reservoir analyses, snow and glacier hydrology, watershed management, groundwater assessment and conjunctive use, irrigation return flow, water-logging and salinity, drainage congestion, rejuvenation of lakes, water quality, seawater ingress, hydrological instrumentation, etc.

In 2006 the Institute embarked upon an ambitious program of development of decision support systems for water resources planning with World Bank assistance. The Institute has world-class laboratories and infrastructure, and a team of accomplished, dedicated scientists.

Keeping in view the developments in hydrology at the global level, new challenges in the water sector in the country due to growing water scarcity, climate change, water pollution, and conflicts arising due to water shortages, the Institute has identified the following thrust areas during 2007-2012: hydrology of extremes, impact of land use changes on water resources, groundwater modeling and management, sustainable water systems management, surface water modeling and regional hydrology and environmental hydrology. The Institute seeks international collaboration on these issues.
