Experts at the Palace

The Graduate Certificate Program in Historic Preservation at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, in conjunction with the Historic Hawai'i Foundation and the Friends of ‘Iolani Palace, is proud to present the 19th in its annual outreach program, Experts at the Palace.

Initiated by the program’s founder, William Murtagh, in 1988, the Experts at the Palace series focuses on issues and concerns important in historic preservation in the community. The series, as always, draws both from the pool of local expertise and that of visitors to the Islands.

This year’s program envelopes the theme of Hawai'i’s maritime historic and cultural resources. Honoring long-time preservationist, popular columnist and much loved resident, Bob Krauss (1924-2006), the series includes presentations on Bob himself, his legacy, including a talk on the Hawai'i Maritime Center and the Falls of Clyde, one of Bob’s most cherished projects, and discussions of issues ranging from recent archaeological surveys in the Northern Hawaiian Islands through the conservation of Hawai'i’s unique heritage of aquaculture in the form of monumental fishponds, to aspects of the Islands’ World War II history.

The Friends of ‘Iolani Palace has provided the venue for the series from the beginning. Lectures take place at the Old Archives Building on the ‘Iolani Palace Grounds. This year special arrangements are being provided for parking on the Palace grounds.
