Passages to Freedom: Slavery, Resistance and America's Great Contradiction

February 6, 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Supreme Court Building, 417 King Street, 1913 Court Room

In commemoration of Black History Month, the King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center and the UH-Manoa Museum Studies Graduate Certificate Program present Passages to Freedom: Slavery, Resistance, and America’s Great Contradiction.

James O. Horton, Benjamin Banneker Professor of American Studies and History at George Washington University, will be joined by Lois Horton, Professor of Sociology at George Mason University, in a special presentation on America’s history of slavery.

For most of the first hundred years, America’s commitment to freedom and human rights clashed with its dependence on human slavery. This lecture will explore the efforts of African Americans and their allies to resist the institution of slavery and work for its abolition. Of particular interest will be the story of Anthony Allen, a fugitive slave from New York State who, in the early 19th century, found sanctuary and a new life in Hawai‘i.
