Improving Achievement in Schools Presentation

A lot of people think that the underachievement of some groups of young Americans, particularly those growing up poor or members of various racial and ethnic minority groups, is mostly caused by the children themselves, or by their families.

In this presentation entitled "Improving Achievement and Closing Gaps Between Groups: Lessons from Schools on the Performance Frontier," Kati Haycock, executive director of the Education Trust in Washington, DC, will show the many ways in which schools contribute to the problem, instead of helping to solve it. She will also describe a series of schools that defy all the odds. These schools serve very poor children yet produce fabulous results. You'll see the data, and hear about the lessons from those schools. You'll also learn how powerful educators are in the lives of the children they serve.

Following the data-rich presentation, Brooke Haycock, the Education Trust's Artist in Residence, will perform a one-woman show called "Buzz" that will take you into three high performing high poverty high schools. You'll hear the voices of students, teachers and principals, and learn how these schools enable students who nobody believes can achieve to "fly" to the highest heights.
