A Review of the Hydrogeology of Oahu
by Chester Lao, Honolulu Board of Water Supply. A review of the basic hydrogeology of Oahu and some changes in interpretation that have occurred in the past 45 years is offered to persons new and old to this field. These subjects range from old stable rift zone origin to hot spot and plate tectonics are pointed out. The composition and role of caprock on Oahu hydrogeology are discussed. The paths of ground water movement in dike intruded aquifers or alluvium are still areas of a certain degree of uncertainty. The effects of the 6 years of lower rainfall years and the return of heads to heights unseen since 40 years ago on the midpoints of the fresh water lens are shown. The imbalance of head to the midpoint is discussed. Estimation of sustainability and weakness of estimates for sources are pointed out.
