Rethinking Medicine in the 21st Century: Biosecurity, Global Health, and Culture. Speaker: Dr. Nancy Chen, Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology, University of California, Santa Cruz
Longstanding concerns about disease and access to health care are amplified with recent pandemics in the early 21st century. Medical anthropology offers a critical role in situating medicine within cultural knowledge and practices. In examining responses to global health, this talk traces the bifurcation of health as commodified medicine and as national agenda. With case studies of food and medicine, the rise of biosecurity will be framed within broader cultural politics, bureaucratic entanglements, and historical patterns of difference.
