Discussion Panel on Okinawa’s Challenges in the 21st Century

April 11, 12:00pm - 1:30pm
Manoa Campus, Tokioka Room (Moore 319)

"Discussion Panel on Okinawa's Challenges in the 21st Century" will discuss various issues facing Okinawa and its people. Issues will include: Okinawan language and culture, U.S. military bases in Okinawa, economic challenges and business opportunities, and social concerns. Audience members may also join in the discussion by asking questions or offering comments.

As the Center for Japanese Studies moves forward to establish a Center for Okinawan Studies at UHM, CJS hope to learn about the issues that concern faculty, students and members of the community.

The discussants are Dr. Gregory Smits (Associate Professor, Department of History and Religious Studies, Pennsylvania State University), Mr. Robert Nakasone (EWC & Worldwide Uchinanchu Business Association), Ms. Yukari Akamine (MA Candidate, Sociology), Mr. Kyle Ikeda (PhD Candidate, EALL), Dr. Joyce Chinen (Sociology, UHWO), Dr. Kyoko Hijirida (EALL, UHM), and Dr. Leon Serafim (EALL, UHM)
