Faculty Lecture Series: Honolulu Volcanism
April 11, 3:30pm - 4:30pmManoa Campus, Hamilton Library, Rm 301
A lecture by Professor Michael Garcia (Geology & Geophysics, SOEST). Honolulu is hip, hot and happening, but it's also a hotspot for volcanism.
Professor Garcia, with his students and colleagues from Japan and Germany, is working to determine the age, volumes and compositions of the volcanics in our fair city in order to solve a puzzle that has stumped geologists for years: why hotspot volcanism rejuvenates after a one million year hiatus. Please join us for a lively presentation on the what, where, when and why of Honolulu volcanism.
Garcia received geology degrees from Humboldt State University (BA), and UCLA (PHD). Since joining UH in 1976, he has concentrated on hotspot volcanism, especially the active Hawaiian volcanoes: Kilauea, Mauna Loa and Loihi. His research uses lavas as "windows" into the mantle to better understand the composition and melting processes asociated with the Hawaiian mantle plume. Publications and research details are available at his website: .
