Mark McNally: Translation and Tokugawa 'Nativism'
April 11, 12:00pm - 1:30pmManoa Campus, Burns Hall Room 2118
Translating from one language to another presents not just technical challenges but conceptual ones as well. Specifically, the translator is faced with having to translate concepts, which exist in one cultural setting but not another. Translated concepts, therefore, simultaneously fall short of the meanings of their original terms, as well as introduce a surplus of meanings. I refer to this phenomenon as hermeneutical arithmetic. In this paper, I will look at the issues pertaining to the translation of the Japanese phenomenon of Kokugaku as nativism.
