May Day Events

May 1, 11:00am - 3:00pm
Honolulu Campus, Cafeteria

Aloha Kakou, come and celebrate May Day with ASUH-HCC Student Senate and Student Life in the cafeteria. We do this event to celebrate Lei Day in Hawaii. The May Day Celebration in Hawai’i is a tradition that was set in 1929 by Don Blanding. Blanding saw how the Hawaiians greeted the visitors and suggested that the Hawaiians do the same as their ancestors did and wear leis on their heads, necks, and hats. From then on we have carried the tradition year after year.

A fellow writer to Don was a lady named Grace Tower Warren who came up with the idea of a holiday on May 1 in conjunction with May Day. She is also responsible for the phrase, "May Day is Lei Day." For this great celebration we will be having free Hawaiian plates for HCC Spring 2007 students. We request that you have a valid HCC Spring 2007 Student ID. We will be having assorted craft vendors, live entertainment, HCC Carnival rides and games, and the 8th Annual Mr. and Ms. HCC 2007 Pageant during the lunch hour while you are enjoying your meals. Check your campus bulletin boards for more details.

We will serve until we run out of plates.
