Sakamaki Lecture Series: The First Battle
July 18, 7:00pm - 9:00pmManoa Campus, Yukiyoshi Room, Krauss Hall 012
Film (60 minutes/color/2006). Screening followed by a Q & A session with producer Tom Coffman.
The film chronicles the Council for Inter-racial Unity, from its formation in 1939 Honolulu, to its subsequent actions in support of Hawai‘i's large Japanese-ancestry community. While 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry were relocated from the West Coast and interned, a behind-the-scenes battle for justice and equality—reaching as far as the White House—set Hawai‘i on a different course.
The First Battle portrays people working together under extreme stress against great odds.
