Vincent K. Pollard
From Southern Seas to Cyberspace: Chinese Diaspora Websites in 11 Languages
How are concepts of “Chineseness” defined on the Web? Since 1994, Chinese diaspora websites have explored themes such as family, community and health, religion, business, and racial discrimination—even lion dancing. The Chinese Cultures Abroad (海外华人文化) WWW Virtual Library includes detailed entries for 120 websites, evaluating how “ethnic,” “Overseas,” and “transnational” Chinese represent themselves online—or are depicted by others.
Vincent K. Pollard’s Globalization, Democratization, and Asian Leadership (Ashgate, 2004) just went into a second printing. Author of fifty reviews of books or films, he also has published in Chinese Southern Diaspora Studies and other journals. Pollard teaches in the UH System.
